If you just want the Linux and Open Source stuff, head over to http://cookingwithlinux.com .Today’s WineToday, we travel to Spain for our feature wine. It’s a 2018 Verdejo Sauvignon Blanc by Toro Bravo, of La Mancha, Spain. The Verdejo accounts for 70% of the grapes with the remaining 30% going to the Sauvignon Blanc grapes. This is a lovely crisp, straw colored white, with pear overtones coupled with a lemony zest. There’s also a hint of mustard that follows in behind, giving this wine a great deal more character than you’d expect in a $7 bottle of wine (Canadian prices). Honestly, there’s no way a wine this cheap should taste so good, but it does. Enjoy!News. Rumors. For example, think back, if you can, to “libdvdcss,” a library that allowed Linux users to play encrypted DVDs on their computers, even though that could bring a felony charge in the United States. Consider that users had movies on DVD that they bought and paid for, and they wanted to play them on a DVD player they had bought and paid for, using a computer they had bought a paid for. Despite following all the rules and legally paying for every hardware piece along the chain, Linux users were barred because the code necessary to allow that to play their legal content was barred to them.So they broke the encryption, thereby breaking the law, the infamous Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA. The whole thing was obviously unfair, at least to those of us in the Linux community, so it seemed like a good reason to ignore the law. This law, remember, carried a felony charge.Open Source VR WorldsI’ve been spending a lot of time in...

Persedo Polishing Technology, With Tasting, And DRAM Breakthrough
Jan 16 2020 • 61 min
Persedo. Ricky Ford, President.Traditional distillation and barrel aging deliver great spirits. And we respect tradition. But consumption habits are changing. Your customers demand smooth and more approachable tastes, with less burn; the kind of taste you can only get with premium and super-premium spirits. To deliver that premium quality of aged spirits quickly and cost-effectively, you must remove certain inferior alcohols and create desired esters (before or after barreling) without the loss of volume from ever-extended barrel time. To produce a premium vodka or gin from neutral spirits, additional distillation and filtration is the standard protocol today. Instead, you can realize 20% more volume, use less energy and reach premium quality much faster using the Persedo Polishing Technology. NordVPN Statement On Hack, 179 Million AutoClerk, Google Quantum Supremacy
Oct 23 2019 • 61 min
Computer and Technology News. The facts: what happenedThere are no signs showing that any of our customers were affected or that their data was accessed by the malicious actor. While being connected to the server, the hacker could only see what an ordinary ISP would see, but it could not have been personalized or linked to a particular user. The intruder managed to gain access to a single server we were renting from a Finnish data center. The server itself did not contain any user activity logs. None of our applications send user-created credentials for authentication, so usernames and passwords couldn’t have been intercepted. Our service as a whole was not hacked; our code was not hacked; the VPN tunnel was not breached. The NordVPN applications are unaffected. It was an individual instance of unauthorized access to 1 of more than 5000 servers we have. The hacker managed to access this server because of the mistakes made by the data center owner, of which we were not aware. As soon as we found out about the issue, we ceased our relationship with this particular data center and shredded the server. It was not a targeted attack against NordVPN – as the media has discovered, at least two other VPN services were affected. There’s a chance that other services that rented servers from this data center could have been affected as well. The incident effectively showed that the affected server did not contain any user activity logs. To prevent any similar incidents, among other means, we encrypt the hard disk of each new server we build. The security of our customers is the highest priority to us and we will raise the standards even more.Timeline:1. The affected server was brought online on January 31st, 2018.2. Evidence of the breach appeared in public on March 5th, 2018. *Further evidence suggests that this information only became available soon after the breach actually occurred.*3. The potential for unauthorized access to our server was restricted when the data center deleted the undisclosed management account on March 20th, 2018.4. The server was shredded on April 13, 2019 – the moment we suspected a possible breach. We as well updated our blog post: https://nordvpn.com/blog/official-response-datacenter-breach/.
